Rumbling Bald on Lake Lure
Apple Valley Golf Course
Lake Lure, North Carolina
2nd Hole / Par-5 / 531 Yards
Architect: Dan Maples (1986)
The key to memorable holes is when the strategic and the inherent beauty of Mother Nature are woven together. Apple Valley is located on rolling terrain which adds to the overall experience.
The 2nd provides an array of options for players to consider. Standing on the teeing area the hole turns right in the drive zone and players have to determine how much of the corner they are prepared to handle.
Those erring too far right will be blocked and will need to play a smart recovery shot in order to secure a par.
Two fairway bunkers need to be carefully assessed — one on each side and positioned at different intervals.
Flagstick location is key — a three-tier green slopes severely from back-to-front. Staying short for an uphill putt is crucial on the 4,773 square foot green. The green is also set diagonally and positioned on an angle that requires players to play to the right on their second shot in order to leave a direct line 3rd shot into the green.
Par-5 holes can generally be easy fodder for players looking to make a quick birdie. The 2nd at Apple Valley requires adroit positioning of one’s golf ball at all phases. Birdie is possible but bogey or worse can quickly happen for those failing to play smartly and execute with precision.
