Superstition Mountain Golf and Country Club Stands Out

Many of the LPGA gals still claim that Superstition Mountain Golf and Country Club is the best venue they have played on tour even though it has been over two decades since their event was held here.  There is no better view when practicing or playing through the fairways. Hues on the majestic mountain backdrop change with sun lighting and shadows throughout a round. The dining room and veranda of the beautiful Tuscan clubhouse are perched to absorb the view while enjoying the chef’s unique creations. This premier private club is filled with smiles on the staff as well as the members. And why not? It is a serene, private setting with 36 Nicklaus holes, Sports Club, pools, tennis, pickleball and basketball courts plus a robust social calendar.

The Prospector Course begins with a deceptive angle to an elevated green. There is always a bloom to spot whether a bright yellow or pink on a barrel cactus or sweet flowering mesquite. Sometimes the arm of a Saguaro cactus points the way as quail parade with bobbing bonnets. Bunnies munch on tee boxes even while golfers play through. 18 is the beautiful water hole where Meg Mallon once scored 14, so you can feel pretty good about any score.  Arizona’s purple majesty shines behind the tee box as the clubhouse beckons beyond the green.

The Lost Gold Course holds equal golf weight in the way of challenge, beauty and memories. For us there were the Pro Ams played, especially the one with Julieta Granada, taking first place.  On the 12th hole she stopped at her palatial guest home to retrieve her doggie who sat calmly in the cart as we finished the round. Golf course homes blend like chameleons into the desert environs or stand out as architectural sculptures like guardian golf angels.  Emerald fairways flow through the desert flora of the Lost Gold course where there is no loss of vistas. It is so well manicured that even the desert pebbles look tidy.

Regardless of the hole, most members and staff will advise on the slope of the greens – “they break away from the mountain- except when they don’t.” And there are a few that don’t, leaving golfers to commiserate. Any dismay is a brief emotion as the gorgeous contrast between desert and mountains is awe-inspiring. Afternoon play brings the visual challenge of direct sun as it flirts with the pink horizon. A hang glider might sail above while a wedding reception at the clubhouse sounds more like a football stadium.

Locker rooms are spacious and comfortable with all the amenities. The pro shop has a wide selection of elegantly displayed merchandise and the courtyard facing the mountain with a fountain, is another sweet spot where many celebrations take place.

Make Superstition Mountain your home and you may find your pot of gold in this dreamy golf community. Canyon Lake is a drive away, not a club but a car. The newer 202 freeway makes Sky Harbor Airport or Scottsdale a 35-minute drive – so close to convenience yet privately secluded in nature’s most serene, sunny setting. www.superstitionmountain.com
