Short and sweet is the story of The Swing at Omni PGA Frisco in Texas.
En route to Horseshoe Bay Resort from Oklahoma, we swung by to take a few swings on the cute little course. Ten par 3 holes were co-designed by Gil Hanse and Beau Welling, architects of the 18-hole Fields Ranch East and Fields Ranch West courses, respectively.
While the National High School Invitational played out on the championship courses at Omni PGA Frisco, Matthew Labady, purple heart recipient, started us on The Swing with a couple irons, putter, and sleeve of balls in slender shoulder bags.
Distances range from 64 to 103 yards for great short game practice for $40. Windage is a factor but elevation not too much. Stay out of the rough and the bunkers and it’s a quick and easy, fun round.
The Ice House chef applauds golfers who smoke the first green as he tends his BBQ smoker, prepping after round eats.
A blue 50’s truck that was found in the Fields when the property was purchased, has been repurposed as Casamigos for refreshments in the center of The Swing. The truck was probably used to transport the old-fashioned rectangle bales of hay bound with twine.
Today, a round bale of hay with a flagstick serves as the PGA Frisco logo. Swing your partner to the music blaring from the speakers, Pinehurst’s Cradle style, except it is all country tunes. Frisco is country from the get-go.
After The Swing, you might two-step over to The Dance Floor, a two-acre putting course for $5. Or dial in all your clubs on the driving range with covered access to Toptracer Technology. For more fun, head to the Lounge by Topgolf or the Ryder Cup Grille.
The new Home of the PGA headquarters is adjacent to new Omni PGA Frisco Resort. It’s all freshly and creatively constructed at the Omni and the Monument Realty PGA District with Gimme Toys, Vineyard Vines shops and Blue Lacy Mercantile where you can get fit for your western boots and custom hats. The shop smells of rich fine leather.
The Omni is country cozy with leather seating and glassed fireplaces throughout, just for ambience in the sizzling summer heat when guests may enjoy a dip in the pool.
The KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship played on the Fields East course and was a smashing success. Next week, starting 7/31, the PGA Buyers’ Summit will take place at Omni PGA Frisco, and it will be fun for all the attendees who swing by.
